'MR. TAXI' Tops Music Charts in Taiwan

Girls' Generation has dominated Taiwan!

Girls' Generation's new song "MR. TAXI" has topped Gmusic, one of the five largest music charts in Taiwan. Gmusic doesn't only include Korean and Japanese songs, but Taiwanese and Chinese music, too.

"MR. TAXI" is Girls' Generation's third Japanese single which was released on April 27. This is their first original Japanese songs as the others were adapted from their Korean versions. This song has been attracting the public's attention as "Yellow Soshi" and "steering-wheel dance" continue to be a hot topic.

Even though there weren't any promotional activities in this Chinese-speaking country, Girls' Generation's popularity made them top the music charts with ease.

Girls' Generation's Arena Tour will start on the 31st of May in Osaka and will end on the 17th of July, passing through Tokyo, Saitama, Hiroshima, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Altogether, an estimation of 100,000 people will be attending the tour. Girls' Generation will then proceed with their second solo concert, "2011 GIRLS' GENERATION TOUR", on July 23 and 24 at the Seoul Olympic Stadium.

Girls' Generation 'Gee' Tops MelOn 2000's Chart, Crowned K-Pop Song of the Decade

In the 2000's, the Korean music industry has replaced the ballad genre that was so dominating since the 1980's with idol groups who focus on dance music. Girl groups like Wonder Girls, Kara, 2ne1 and boy groups like Big Bang and 2PM have all become the strongest influences in the mainstream music industry. In the end, the song of the decade of the 2000's was 'Gee' by Girls' Generation.

The accomplishment of being named song of the decade is made even more impressive by the fact that 'Gee' was released at the end of the decade in 2009. With a record-setting nine consecutive wins on Music Bank, 'Gee' left an impressive impact that solidified Girls' Generation's status as the dominating force in the Korean music industry.

Making a stand in the midst of the trend of idol groups and girl groups are "Pure Talent" singers. Korea's representative R&B icons, Brown Eyes, managed to place as a dark-horse second in the chart with the song 'Little by Little'. Ballad, rock and other genres have also been significant in the Korean music industry. The past decade has drawn a distinct line between music "to be seen" and music "to be heard".

However, the decade's most attractive genre were idol groups and girl groups who were born at the heart of dance music. Their influence has grown to the point where their activities are considered to be at the center of South Korea's pop culture. Girls' Generation, Wonder Girls, Kara, Big Bang, Super Junior, 2PM, 2AM, SHINee and other idol groups' busy activities close out this decade with a dominating presence.

After ending the decade as one of Korea's top musical groups, Girls' Generation will now attempt to leave the same powerful impression on Japan. With the recent release of 'MR. TAXI' and the prospect of a full Japanese concert tour, the girls appear to be off to a good start in working towards that goal.

SNSD ranks #2 at Oricon daily singles chart

Via tokyohive:

Kpop artists are proving to be a strong force in the Japanese music market. Jang Geun Suk and SNSDhave secured the top two places in today’s Oricon daily singles charts.

This was above top idol group SNSD, who released their new single “MR. TAXI/ Run Devil Run.” SNSD sold 40,194 copies falling just short of Jang geun Suk at second place. Third place was Kobukuro who sold 16, 788 copies of their new single “Ano taiyo ga kono sekai wo terashi tsuzukeru yoni“. It is quite obvious that both Jang Geun Suk and SNSD have separated themselves from the rest of the pack.

Although this is only the first day of release, it is possible that we can have high expectations that both Jang geun Suk and SNSD are capable for taking the top spot in the Oricon weekly rankings.
